Address markings
In addition to the addressee’s details, the sender’s name and address information, Itella’s technical markings and item and postage indications must be provided on the envelope.
The address field can only contain the addressee's name and address. Slogans or other catch-phrases are not permitted. A customer code or any other identifier must be placed above the addressee's name.
When item and postage indications are placed on a printout or in text format on the address label, they must always be given above the addressee’s name.

Marking the addressee’s address
To enable successful optical reading, it is important that the address rows be in the correct order. The addressee's address information must be divided into five rows:
- Row 0: other information on the addressee: title, customer code, subscription code
or other customer-related information - Row 1: addressee
- Row 2: supplement to the addressee’s name (organisational unit, department,
office, processed by, occupant of the apartment, c/o etc. - Row 3: Spare row, not recognised by the automatic sorting machine (if required, this row can include the addressee's street address, even if the item is sent to the addressee's P.O. Box address)
- Row 4: Exact delivery address (street address, P.O. Box address etc.)
- Row 5: Postal code and locality

Other markings
The destination country's practice determines how address information should be written on international letters. The name of the country must always be written in CAPITAL LETTERS.
When you give your address to someone living abroad or send mail from abroad to Finland, add the code FI- in front of the postal code and write FINLAND below it.
Specifications
The addressee’s name comprises
- A private person’s first name (or abbreviation thereof) and last name and possible title or profession (to be written in front of the name).
- An independent entrepreneur’s business name.
- The name of the company, institution, organisation or authority.
Abbreviation of name
- If the name is that of a private person, abbreviation should be restricted to the first name.
- If the name is that of a company or organisation, either an official or otherwise well-known abbreviation of the name may be used or the name should be abbreviated in accordance with general spelling rules.
The delivery address comprises
- In urban areas, the name of the street or road, house number and possible letter, staircase identifier and flat number (separated by spaces).
- In rural areas, the name of the road and number of the building.
- P.O. Box number (e.g. P.O. Box 123) without exception if the addressee is using a post office box.
- Special addresses, e.g. Poste restante

The use of abbreviations in address information should be avoided. However, if it is necessary to abbreviate e.g. due to lack of space, standard abbreviations should be used such as katu = k, kuja = kj, kylä = kl, polku = p, tie = t, gata = g, stig = st, väg(en) = v
Postal code and town/city (postal outlet)
A postal code is integral to each address. The postal code is marked in front of the name of the town/city (postal outlet).
For P.O. Box addresses, the last digit of the postal code is always one (1).
