Mechanical sorting
The recipient’s address must be printed on the envelope or be visible inside a window-panel envelope.
The items may not contain any hard or inflexible objects such as paper clips, keys or casings, since such objects would disrupt the operation of the sorting machine and endanger the delivery of the entire batch at the required speed.
Only sealed envelopes or cards can be sorted mechanically. Items are posted in boxes, large items separate from small ones, with the address information facing the same direction.
Items that do not meet the specifications set for machine-sortable items will be processed and priced as manually-sortable.
For specific instructions, please see the Guide for designing machine-sortable letter items.
Requirements for the address field and area Machine sorting sets specific requirements for the address field and area. Review these requirements prior to ordering or printing address information.
